HEIC, HEIF, JPG and JPEG: What Changes?
HEIF means High Efficiency Image File Format and describes a container family. HEIC is the common extension used for HEIF images encoded with HEVC on Apple devices. JPG and JPEG are two filename extensions for the same older JPEG image format. An HEIF to JPG conversion decodes one visible image and encodes it again for wider compatibility.
Apple explains that supported sharing and import workflows may automatically provide a more compatible JPEG copy. This page is useful when that automatic path is unavailable or when you want to choose the JPG quality and inspect the result yourself. A file extension is not proof of a valid photo
Why a HEIC File May Fail to Convert
The converter checks the container before decoding. A clear file-level error is safer than creating a blank or misleading JPG. One failure does not remove successful photos from the batch.
The file was renamed to .heic
Changing an extension does not change the internal format. Return to the source app and export a real HEIC, HEIF, or JPG.
The transfer or download is incomplete
Copy the original photo again from the phone or cloud library. A partial container may have the right name but missing image data.
The browser runs out of memory
Close other large tabs, retry one photo, or use a smaller batch. HEIC decoding can need much more working memory than the compressed file size suggests.
The photo uses unsupported auxiliary data
Export a compatible JPEG from Apple Photos or the originating device when the browser decoder cannot read that HEIC variant.

Are HEIC and HEIF the same as JPG and JPEG?
